Commonly asked questions about lead free tapware

It is an industry-recognised endorsement identifying products available in New Zealand have been assessed for quality, suitability and performance under the WaterMark AS/NZS 4020 standard, and has been confirmed that the product meets the 0.25% maximum allowable lead content now required by updated building code regulations for safer drinking water (also called potable water).

It helps reduce lead exposure in drinking water applications and supports healthier homes.

From 2 May 2026, all products that deliver drinking water must comply with The New Zealand Building Code’s Acceptable Solution G12/AS1 to limit the amount of lead content permitted in plumbing products. You can read more about this regulation here.

Amendment 14 to the Acceptable Solution introduces new requirements for plumbing products that must be met from 2 May 2026:

  • Maximum lead content: Any copper alloy product used in contact with drinking water must contain no more than 0.25% lead. This includes pipe fittings, valves, taps, mixers, water heaters and water meters.
  • DZR copper alloy requirement: Any copper alloy component that is in contact with drinking water and subject to hydrostatic pressure must be made from dezincification-resistant (DZR) copper alloy.
